This peer-sharing session will explore how districts are adapting Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports to respond to the strengths and needs of specific student populations within a cohesive MTSS framework. The session is designed to foster cross-district learning, highlight promising practices, and generate practical ideas that participants can bring back to their teams.

Supporting the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Students Experiencing Homelessness/Newcomer Students
Thursdays 9:30-11am OR 12:30-2pm | March 26, April 9, April 30, May 14
We know that you are navigating rising numbers of students whose schooling has been disrupted by mobility, displacement, trauma, and rapid adjustment to new environments. Youth experiencing homelessness and newcomer youth—especially those who are youth of color, sexual and gender minorities, or hold intersecting identities—are among the most marginalized in schools, facing heightened risks of trauma, victimization, academic failure, and limited access to mental health and social services.

Walker will be providing a four-part professional learning community (PLC) to help school teams build capacity for supporting the mental health and wellbeing of students and their families, with a particular focus on newcomer students and students experiencing homelessness.

Each PLC will consist of four 90-minute virtual sessions. Ideally a team from your school/district would attend the sessions rather than just one representative. We know how hard it is to coordinate schedules and calendars, or pull multiple people at the same time for PD. We also know that the greatest chance of impact is when a collaborative team attends together and plans time to debrief and discuss learnings and implementation. There will be some planning and discussion time within the PLC sessions, but we hope you will schedule additional time (or including time into existing meetings) to plan and debrief.
